In twenty-five years of shooting interiors and architecture, the single hardest thing to explain to a client is that the photograph they saw in their head was taken in a room that looked nothing like the one they are standing in at the time they hired me to shoot it. The light made the picture. The room is just the room.
This piece is about what I actually do on a shoot to get the light I need. It is not theoretical. Everything here is something I have done in a real building, on a real commission, with a real client waiting for the images. I am writing it because the photographers who ask me how this work is done usually get answers that are either too vague to be useful or so specific to one piece of gear that it becomes a shopping list rather than a method.
Reading a space before you touch any equipment
The first thing I do when I arrive at a property — before unpacking a single case — is walk every room at every cardinal direction and note where the light falls. This is not artistic. It is logistical. I need to know:
- Which windows face which compass direction and what time of day each provides direct versus diffused light
- What surfaces in the room are reflective — polished stone, glass, chrome, marble — and at what angles those reflections become visible from likely camera positions
- Where the ambient fill is coming from: doorways, stairwells, adjacent rooms, skylights
- What the room looks like with every light in the building switched on versus switched off, because the client will sometimes want both
I do this with a incident meter, not the camera's LCD. The LCD lies about exposure by up to two stops in either direction and teaches you nothing about the ratio between highlights and shadows. A Sekonic or Malwaremeter meter reading at the subject position tells you what is actually falling on the wall. That is the number that matters.
I also photograph the room with my phone at this stage — wide shots from each corner — so I have a reference for how the space looked before any modification. Clients and designers compare against these. If you have not documented the "before," you have no defence when the client decides the retouching went too far.
Scheduling around the sun path
The most common mistake I see from photographers new to architectural work is treating the shoot date as fixed. It is not. A property shot at solar noon looks fundamentally different from the same property shot at golden hour, and neither is wrong — they are different photographs for different purposes.
For interior work specifically:
- East-facing rooms get their most dramatic light in the first two hours after sunrise. If the client wants warmth and long shadows across a floor, that is when you shoot. By midday the light has moved past direct to diffuse and the room looks flat.
- South-facing rooms in the Northern Hemisphere (UK and Europe) receive direct sun for most of the day. The question is not whether you will have light but whether the client wants the hard shafts of sun on the floor (late morning to early afternoon) or the softer warm light as the sun drops (late afternoon to dusk).
- West-facing rooms peak in the late afternoon through to sunset. These are the rooms where scheduling matters most — you may have a 45-minute window where the light is exactly what the brief calls for, and 20 minutes later it is gone.
- Basements and north-facing rooms get no direct sun. They are the most honest to photograph because what you see is what you get — but they require the most deliberate technique because there is no natural drama to fall back on.
I use PhotoPills and Sun Surveyor to plan the shoot days in advance. The sun path for a given coordinate is fixed and predictable to the minute. The client does not get to choose when the sun is in the right place; I choose the shoot date around it. If the client insists on a date where the light is wrong, I explain — with the app open, showing the azimuth — what the images will look like, and let them decide whether to reschedule or accept different images.
Shaping light without strobes
On most interior shoots I use no flash at all. The reason is not aesthetic preference — it is that flash changes the character of a room in a way that is immediately visible to anyone who has been in the space. The designer spent months specifying lamp temperatures, material reflectances and window treatments. If I light the room with a Profoto B10 from the doorway, the photograph stops being a photograph of that designer's work and becomes a photograph of my lighting. That is the opposite of what the client hired me for.
Instead, I shape what is already there:
Reflectors and bounce cards
A 4×8 sheet of white foam core from a DIY shop, hinged in the middle with tape, is the single most useful piece of lighting equipment I own. Placed outside a window on a sunny day it acts as a diffusion panel that turns hard direct sunlight into a soft directional source. Placed inside, it bounces window light back into shadow areas that need detail — the dark side of a kitchen island, the underside of a dining table, the inside of a bookshelf.
The goal is not to "fill in" shadows to the same level as the highlights. That produces flat, lifeless interior photography that looks like a real estate listing. The goal is to reduce the contrast ratio to something the sensor can capture in a single exposure — typically bringing the darkest meaningful shadow from zone 2 to zone 4, a two-stop lift, which is the difference between a photograph and a silhouette.
Flags and negative fill
Less intuitive but equally important: sometimes you need to remove light, not add it. A piece of black duvyn (the fabric used for studio flags) hung between a window and the camera prevents a hard reflection from appearing on a glass surface. Black foam core taped to a C-stand creates negative fill — deepening the shadows on a marble floor that is reflecting the ceiling, for instance — which increases the perceived dynamic range of the photograph and makes the room look more three-dimensional.
This is not a trick. It is the same technique used on every professional architectural shoot you have seen in Architectural Digest or Dezeen. The difference between that work and amateur interior photography is not the camera. It is the control of light, and most of that control is subtraction.
Exposure bracketing and the HDR question
Even with careful light shaping, interior scenes routinely exceed the dynamic range of any digital camera. A sunlit window next to a dimly lit corridor presents a 14-to-16-stop range. The Sony A7RV I shoot with has roughly 13.5 stops of usable dynamic range at ISO 100. The gap has to be closed somehow.
The method I use is exposure bracketing: I shoot a sequence of between five and nine frames at fixed aperture, varying only the shutter speed in one-stop increments. A typical sequence for a room with a bright window might be 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4. These are then merged in post — not with the radioactive, halo-ridden look that HDR software produces by default, but with manual luminance blending in Photoshop using layer masks. Each exposure contributes detail to a specific tonal range. The window highlights come from the darkest exposure; the corridor shadows from the brightest. The merge is done by hand, zone by zone, and a finished plate takes between four and eight hours of retouching depending on complexity.
This is the part of the process that clients never see and that most photographers will not describe honestly. The photograph is not taken in the camera. It is assembled, and the assembly is where the judgement lives. I decide which exposure to use for which area, how much shadow detail to reveal, how much highlight to recover — and those decisions are made with the client's brief open on a second monitor, because the image has to serve their purpose, not mine.
When supplemental light becomes necessary
There are situations where ambient light simply cannot produce a usable image, and the correct response is to bring in additional lighting. These include:
- Windowless rooms — a wine cellar, a media room, a security corridor. There is no natural light to shape. Continuous LED fixtures with colour-matched temperature (typically 5600K to match daylight through a window, or 3200K for a "warm lamp" look the designer has specified) are the only way to get a photograph that shows the space as designed.
- Night exteriors — architectural exteriors after dark are lit by the building's own landscape and facade lighting. Sometimes that lighting is sufficient and the shoot is a matter of timing (the blue-hour window, roughly 20 minutes after sunset, when the sky still holds colour but the building lights are fully visible). Sometimes the lighting designer needs help — adding wash lights on the facade, or replacing failed bulbs that the maintenance team has not got to yet.
- Product photography in situ — a specific piece the client wants featured (a bathtub fitting, a range cooker, a piece of custom furniture) may require its own lighting setup that bears no relation to the room lighting. This is product photography, not interior photography, and the technique is different.
In every case where I bring in artificial light, the client and the designer are present and they sign off on the look before the shutter is pressed. The reason is simple: the photograph becomes a representation of their design intent, not a documentation of the space as it exists. I need their confirmation that what I am about to create is what they want, because once it is published it is their name on the project, not mine.
Post-processing and where to stop
The retouching of architectural images has become a discipline of its own. There are retouchers who specialise exclusively in interior and architectural work, and the best of them charge more per image than many photographers charge per day. I do my own retouching because the decisions are too intertwined with the shoot to hand off.
The principles I work to:
- Remove nothing that is structural. If there is a fire extinguisher in the hallway, it stays. If there is a mirror reflection that shows a room the client does not want shown, we re-shoot from a different angle — we do not clone it out in post.
- Enhance, do not invent. Global colour and contrast adjustments are fine. Adding a sunset sky through a window that was overcast is not. If the client wants a different sky, we shoot on a different day.
- Document every step. I keep the RAW files, the bracket sequence and the layered PSD for every published image for a minimum of seven years. When a client comes back and asks for a different crop or a different grade — and they always do — the work is already there.
Working with the client before the shoot
The single most important thing I do happens before I pick up a camera. It is the shot list meeting.
I sit down with the client — the architect, the interior designer, the property developer, the marketing director — and we go through the space room by room. For each room we agree:
- What the image needs to communicate (a sense of scale, the quality of natural light, the material palette, the relationship between inside and outside)
- What time of day the room looks its best and whether we need to shoot at more than one time
- What must not appear in the photograph (security equipment, personal items, identifying information, anything the client has not been informed about)
- How the image will be used — website, print brochure, magazine editorial, advertising — because this affects aspect ratio, resolution requirements, and what degree of retouching is appropriate for the medium
This meeting typically takes two to four hours. It is not billable as a separate line item; it is part of the commission. A photographer who skips it and turns up on the day with a shot list they wrote alone is going to produce images the client has to compromise on, and that is a failure of the photographer, not the client.
Equipment notes
I keep this brief because the gear is the least important part and the part that gets the most attention. The kit I use for architectural and interior work:
- Camera body: Sony A7RV (61MP full-frame). The resolution is not for detail; it is for the ability to crop to a safe-framed image while maintaining print quality, and for dynamic range at low ISO. I never shoot above ISO 800 for client work.
- Lenses: Sony 12-24mm f/4 G (for wide architectural interiors where the room is the subject), Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II (the workhorse, used on 90% of shots), Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II (for detail work and for compressing backgrounds where a wide lens would distort the room). The f/2.8 lenses are for build quality and autofocus speed, not aperture — I shoot interiors at f/8 to f/11.
- Tripod: A professional carbon-fibre tripod with a geared head. Interior and architectural work is done on a tripod, always. A geared head (not a ball head) allows for precise framing adjustments of fractions of a degree. A cable release or the camera's built-in intervalometer eliminates any vibration from pressing the shutter.
- Meter: Sekonic L-858D. The phone is not a light meter.
Everything else — the reflectors, the flags, the diffusion material, the stands, the clamps — costs less than £200 in total from a hardware shop. The investment is in knowing where to put them.
Legal and practical considerations
Two things that come up on every commercial property shoot:
Model releases. If a person appears in the image and is identifiable, you need a release. This includes the client's own staff, the property owner, and the cleaner walking through the hallway at 8am. I carry generic release forms (available from the AOP — Association of Photographers — website) and have them signed before anyone appears in frame.
Insurance and liability.
I carry £5 million public liability and professional indemnity cover. This is not optional for commercial work in the UK — most commercial property owners and management companies require proof of insurance before they will let you on site, and most corporate clients require it as a condition of the contract. The AOP and LAPADA both have arrangements with insurers who understand photographer-specific risks; the premium for my cover is around £900 per year.
