Photographing artwork for print reproduction: colour that survives the printer

Most photographers shooting artwork for reproduction learn the hard way that the camera is the easy part. The client sends the file to a fine art printer, the print comes back too warm, the greens have gone muddy, and somehow it is your problem. It usually is, because colour fault in reproduction work flows upstream to whoever made the capture.

Here is the process I use for paintings, prints and works on paper when the file is destined for giclee or offset reproduction. It is not complicated, but every step exists because skipping it has cost someone a reprint.

Start with the original, not the camera

Before anything is photographed, look at the work under a consistent light source and agree with the client what the target is. A watercolour photographed to look like the sheet under gallery halogens will not match how it looks on a wall at home. There is no universally correct answer, but there must be an agreed one. I photograph under daylight-balanced LED at around 5000K, D50 in colour-geek terms, because that is the standard the print world works to. If the client has a previously printed version that they consider correct, that print comes to the shoot and becomes the reference.

Even light beats clever light

The single most common failure in artwork reproduction is uneven illumination. Two lights at 45 degrees to the work, each roughly the same distance, metered at the four corners and centre of the piece with a flat diffuser over the meter or in-camera spot readings. I aim for a variance under a fifth of a stop corner to corner. Anything more and you will see the gradient in the print even when you cannot see it on screen.

Works behind glass get the polarising treatment: crossed polarisers on the lights and on the lens kill the reflections, at the cost of around two stops of light and slightly desaturated blacks you correct later. For large glazed frames, a black velvet tent around the camera with a hole for the lens does more than any filter.

Camera position and the keystone check

Lens dead centre, sensor plane parallel to the artwork. Every millimetre of tilt becomes keystone distortion and slight focus-field shift that no amount of profile correction fully repairs. Use a level on the frame and on the camera, then shoot a test frame of a plain area and check that the exposure is even edge to edge at the histogram. A moderate focal length, around 70 to 100mm equivalent, keeps perspective compression honest and barrelling negligible. Never shoot artwork at the wide end of a zoom.

The chart is not optional

Every reproduction session includes a colour reference in at least one frame: a 24-patch colour target and a grey card, lit identically to the work. In post, that frame builds the colour profile for the whole session. If the client later disputes the colour of a print, you have a measurable, documented reference rather than a debate about taste. On high-value jobs I shoot the chart at the start and end, since some LED panels drift as they warm up.

Raw capture, careful conversion

Everything is captured raw and converted to 16-bit TIFF in Adobe RGB (1998) for delivery. The editing itself is deliberately boring: white balance from the grey patch, the colour profile applied, then small curves moves only where a direct comparison with the original under the same light shows a departure. Resist the temptation to make the artwork look better than it is. Reproduction work is fidelity work; enhancement is a different service and should be quoted separately.

Two specific checks before export: specular highlights on oil paint should retain texture, not clip to white, and deep shadow areas of dark varnish should hold separation rather than collapsing. Both are unrecoverable at the printer if you get them wrong in the file.

Soft proof before you deliver

Ask the printer for their ICC profile for the intended paper. Soft proofing the file against that profile in Photoshop costs five minutes and catches the classic surprises: a saturated red that Hahnemuhle Photo Rag simply cannot reach, or a subtle blue shift on matte cotton papers. Deliver the file with a note of the profile used, and you transfer responsibility for media behaviour back to where it belongs.

What the client receives

A standard reproduction delivery here is: the full-resolution 16-bit TIFF in Adobe RGB, a JPEG at 300dpi sized to the intended print dimensions, and a web-sized JPEG for catalogue or listing use. Filename carries the work title and dimensions. Files go out with a short summary sheet: capture light temperature, colour profile, target profile, and any notes on varnish or glare handling. That sheet has settled more disputes than any amount of arguing.

Light is the thing that separates a usable capture from a great one, and it is the same discipline whether the subject is a painting or a building.
